Fitness Friday: Manage Holiday Stress With Yoga

Long shopping lines, one too many sugary treats, sleep deprivation… It seems that the list of holiday stressors is almost as long as our holiday wish lists. Instead of stressing out this season, consider taming your holiday stress with yoga! It is already well-known that exercise is one of the best mood-boosters out there, and yoga is no different. Specifically, because yoga fully engages both the mind and body simultaneously, it provides an exceptionally great release from daily stressors. 1. Yoga provides unique physical benefits. Yoga is a particularly great tool for relieving stress because of its unique set of physical benefits. “Yoga helps restore brainwave function back to a healthy level,” Lauralee Beerman, sports club manager at Garden of the Gods Club, explained. “Yoga’s holistic approach to fitness calms the mind while energizing the body, and this is ‘just what the doctor ordered’ during the stressful holiday season.” You’ll step away from a yoga class with a renewed sense of calm and energy.

“Additionally, yoga can help relieve chronic lower back pain from shopping, standing in long lines, sitting in traffic, or extended sitting time at your desk,” Lauralee said. “Yoga relieves pain and tension and can even help to lower blood pressure.”

2. Yoga inserts “stillness” into your day. Amidst a season of hustle and bustle, moments of stillness are much-appreciated. Yoga can help you enjoy such moments. “I find that starting the day with the stillness of mind provided by yoga actually increases productivity throughout the day,” Lauralee said. “Taking time to quiet your mind allows you to assess where your mind and body are, helping you to better understand what you need for the day ahead.”

3. You can try yoga in your own home. With the busy holiday season upon us, it can be difficult to fit in time for yoga or any other form of exercise. Luckily, all you need to reap the stress-relieving benefits of yoga is a yoga mat, a bit of free space, and 15 minutes. Rodney Valdez, celebrated yoga instructor at The Sports Club at Garden of the Gods Club, demonstrates below a few energizing and stress-busting poses that you can perform in the privacy and comfort of your own living room. Rodney has 15 years of experience teaching yoga, and he maintains that building balance and flexibility is a critical component of well-rounded fitness.
