Four Spa Etiquette Tips for Men

The days when a trip to the spa was seen as a women-only activity are long gone. As men discover the many benefits of regular spa treatments, the spa has become a place that feels equally welcoming to both men and women. Even so, a trip to the spa can seem daunting for men who have never visited a spa before and are unsure about what to expect. Below we have listed a few simple tips to reduce uncertainty and encourage proper etiquette during a relaxing day at the spa.

Men benefit from the spa as much as women. These spa etiquette tips will help men feel comfortable while enjoying the spa.

Knowing spa etiquette in advance can help men feel more comfortable visiting a spa.

  1. Speak openly with your therapist. Although it can feel uncomfortable to speak openly with your massage therapist, Spa Finder (a leading resource on everything spa-related) stresses the importance of discussing injuries or other sensitivities that you may have before your treatment. Open communication enables the therapist to address these concerns during your treatment.
  2. Prep your skin for a treatment. Spa Finder also recommends preparing your skin ahead of time for certain treatments. For example, make sure that you shave before receiving a facial. Doing so allows your therapist to address any skin issues such as in-grown hairs or irritation. Additionally, avoid moisturizing your skin prior to receiving a wax. Doing so can make it more difficult to remove the wax.
  3. Avoid strenuous activity post-treatment. In her article “Day Spa Etiquette for Men,” writer Sabah Karimi cautions men to rest for at least two to three hours after receiving treatments like massage. This is because massage detoxifies the body, and allowing yourself time to rest decreases the likelihood of dehydration or injury.
  4. Tip your therapist. Although this one may seem straightforward, many people are unsure of the proper amount to tip their technician or therapist post-treatment. Twenty percent of your total bill is customary; however, you may choose to tip more for service that was particularly impressive.

Not only are massages, facials, and other spa treatments enjoyable, but they are also an excellent way to take care of yourself.
