Wedding Makeup and Beauty Trends for Summer

The spring and summer months are famously beautiful in Colorado, so naturally many brides choose this time to get married. In the midst of this popular wedding season, we thought this was the perfect occasion to talk about wedding makeup. We’ve interviewed Heather Jeffrey, our very own cosmetologist at the Spa & Salon at Garden of the Gods Club, for her wedding tips, trends, and advice for brides this season.

Garden of the Gods Club (GGC):  How did you become interested in doing wedding makeup, and what do you enjoy most about it?
Heather Jeffrey (HJ):  In cosmetology school, a client asked me to do her wedding hair and makeup. I loved it; it was so fun and exciting to be a part of her big day! Hair styling and makeup application are two of my favorite things to do.

GGC:  What are your top pre-wedding beauty tips for Colorado brides?
HJ:  Don’t do anything drastic a week prior to the wedding (i.e. tanning, eyebrow wax, hair cut, etc.). If you are from out of state or having a destination wedding in Colorado, drink a lot of water. If you are dehydrated, it is more difficult to apply makeup evenly.

GGC:  What are some popular wedding eye makeup trends this season?
HJ:  Brides are opting for lighter and more natural makeup, going with brown and pink shades; however, even if you want a soft, natural look, make sure to emphasize the eyes. Using a sufficient amount of eyeliner and mascara will make your eyes pop in photos.

GGC:  Are there any popular trends for lips and cheeks?
HJ:  Some brides are going for a bright red lip and natural eye makeup. No matter what style you go with, make sure it’s balanced. Choose one part of the face to emphasize or else it will be too much.

GGC:  What is airbrush makeup?
HJ:  Airbrush makeup is applied by spraying makeup onto the skin versus using your fingers, brush, or sponges. Traditional makeup tends to clog pores and fade quickly. Airbrush makeup, however, sprays onto skin in millions of droplets, creating a light, even layer of makeup that can last from 12 to 24 hours. This a great option for brides because its flawless application looks great in photos and is very long lasting—two things you want on your wedding day!

GGC:  For the brides who want a natural, “no makeup” look, can you make that happen as well?
HJ:  Of course! My priority is making my client feel comfortable. If she doesn’t wear very much makeup in her daily routine, I am not going to cake on the makeup for her wedding day. I recommend using soft colors and using brown eyeliner since it’s more natural looking.

GGC:  What are some other popular beauty trends for brides this season?
HJ:  It is becoming more popular to not wear a veil; instead, brides opt for flowers, hair combs, or headbands.

GGC:  Do you have any helpful tips for common wedding-day beauty problems, such as an unwanted blemish, puffy eyes, etc.?
HJ:  Create or purchase an emergency beauty kit for your wedding day; these are also a great gift for bridesmaids. It should include the following: Tylenol/pain killer, breath mints, lip gloss/[lip balm], [adhesive bandages], first aid ointment, bobby pins, and hairspray. For puffy eyes, steep green or black tea in ice water; the caffeine and coolness help decrease puffiness.
