4 Fitness Benefits of Swimming & Water Aerobics

Although summer presents extra opportunities for working out outside, it can be difficult to stay cool during the heat of the day. One fabulous way of cooling off while getting fit is to move your workout to the pool. As swimming and water aerobics burn a ton of calories, adding a water workout to your routine is a great idea this summer. Keep reading to learn more about this refreshing form of exercise.

  1. Swimming provides excellent cross-training. Colorado is home to many hikers, bikers, runners, and other athletes. While these activities help keep you in shape, they can also take a toll on your joints over time. Water aerobics and swimming are a great way to cross-train, as they help combat the wear and tear on joints and ligaments.   2. Water exercise increases lung capacity. Another great benefit of working out in water is that it’s great for your lungs. In her article “The Benefits of Water Aerobics: Not Just for the Elderly,” writer Katherine Ayers explains that swimming increases your lung capacity because your lungs are actually forced to work harder due to the pressure of the water.  So if you find yourself getting winded easily, or if you struggle with asthma or other breathing conditions, consider heading to the pool for a workout; however, make sure you clear the form of exercise with your physician first.
  3. Other forms of exercise can be adapted to the water. If you enjoy certain form of exercise–but you need a change of scenery–you may want to move your workout to the pool.
